Three billion people use WhatsApp and almost none of them could tell you what end-to-end encryption actually is. A promise with no proof. And a brand telling you your messages are private sounds like exactly what a brand would say.
So we showed it instead. From WhatsApp's side of the screen, a message is scrambled — pixels, code, nothing anyone could read. Not an explanation of encryption. A look at it. That became the visual language for the whole campaign, on platform and off, and carried into the film our agency partners made.
WhatsApp's biggest campaign ever: Five markets, TV, audio, OOH, social.

DESIGN SYSTEM
Encryption happens in the middle, which is the part nobody sees. Your message goes out fine and shows up fine. Everything in between is where the work happens, but there's nothing to look at.
So the visual device had to work in a single frame for a billboard and unfold over time for film. Legible as a message, illegible as words, unmistakably WhatsApp in either state. Then it had to survive every format the brand runs — on platform, OOH, digital, audio — without needing a caption to explain itself.
